Bright-eyed, bright-lips and a radiant smile that doesn’t flinch under pressure, Caitlin Power is the woman of the hour. Her fast-forward path to success is blazing the trail for androgynous womenswear and this season, she proffered her winning aesthetic to menswear. “I’ve always been inspired by men’s shape and tailoring. I felt now was the time. I mean, I wanted to do it last season but I think it was better that I came out with a strong womenswear collection first, to show Toronto what I can do. Now it’s about honing my craft”.
A designer must be willing to keep what works, while reinventing this each season keeping it fresh for critics’ eyes. Caitlin kept her signature tailoring, figure-flattering silhouette and architectural details while envisioning new manifestations of each. Shoulders were expanded and exaggerated by outer shells and bigger sleeves, which Caitlin said was about “working new silhouettes into the Caitlin Power wardrobe”.
Another variation on the Caitlin Power theme, the young designer incorporated trendier elements into the collection such as working with a new fabric, neoprene, and slimy green, graphic prints. Pairing the prints with a solid Power tailored pant was a genius way to refresh the familiar. Neoprene jackets and t-shirt added a touch of sporty to the collection’s overall sophisticated and sleek vibe.
“I’m not really influenced by trends”, says Power, “I do a lot of background work with what colours are big in each season but overall I try not to veer from tailoring. There’s always going to be the tailored Caitlin Power pant and a body conscious silhouette”.
Her collections are always out of this world. Referencing futuristic movies like Blade Runner and science space technology as her inspirations, the designer is looking ahead in more ways than one. Never stopping to relish in any static sense of success, Power is the kind of designer who keeps moving forward really fast – some might even say, at the speed of light.
