Working long hours, dark hours (thanks fall back), and just the general lack of summer have all attributed to Eurotrash’s annual case of the winter blues. I dunno why I thought I could beat them this year! So what to do once you’ve got the winter blues and it’s only November? Blog, read, download copious amounts of music, buy a new iPod to put all the music on, blog, swoon over lookbook.nu entries of pretty swedish people, make miscellaneous piles of clothing in various corners of my room, straighten my hair even if I have nowhere to go, drink beer, skype to london, skype to kingston, read.

This could go on for months. What I’m particularly satisfied with at the moment was my decision to pluck Watchmen from my bookcase Saturday evening and actually start reading it. Like my list of movies to watch, my list of books to read is probably just as long and snowballing. Watchmen has been on it for quite some time, gifted to me by a former (if there’s such a thing) comic book lover-turned-pharmacist. Come to think of it, I’ve gotten a lot of great gifts from pharmacists – a Gruen vintage watch, the Watchmen graphic novel…. hmm wait a minute….

That’s the problem, I love the novel so much that I’m almost finished it 2 days later and I can’t stop thinking about what an unequivocally talented writer Alan Moore is. I mean, I’m not gonna sit here like some arts student and talk to you about literary devices employed so so aptly and the cinematic qualities I totally didn’t realize comic books had. What I will say, however, is that I’ve totally immersed myself in the Watchmen universe to the point where I sort of don’t want the book to end. Since my comic book knowledge is limited to a generic obsession with Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica as a teen and later a short period in which I dated a comic book fiend (trips to the Silver Snail on date night, lying in bed with Batman looking down at me from his desk, you know), I have no idea what a good chaser to the Watchmen would be!

In the meantime, I can leave you with a few of my favourite quotes so far and oh yeah, my superhero sweatsuit courtesy of Wildfox.

“None of you understand. I’m not locked up in here with you. You’re locked up in here with me” – Rorschach

“The superman exists, and he’s american” – newscaster announcing Dr. Manhattan to the world.

“Why do we argue? Life’s so fragile, a successful virus clinging to a speck of mud suspended in endless nothing. Next week, I could be putting her into a garbage sack, placing her outside for collection” – Dr. Malcolm Long

“I mean, who needs all this hardware to catch hookers and pure-snatchers? I mean, really?” – Dan, The Night Owl

“We’re all puppets, Laurie. I’m just a puppet who can see the strings” – Dr. Manhattan

Laurie: “MMM insatiable, huh? Well, I’m open to suggestions. What shall we do next?”

Dan: I’ve been thinking about that, and I feel we have certain obligations to our fraternity. I think we should spring Rorschach”.

Laurie: “What?”
